Meet the Newly Minted Doctor — Dr. Wenbo Yan

We are delighted to announce that Dr. Wenbo Yan has successfully defended his PhD thesis, titled
“Geometry and Thermal Engineering of VCSELs for Enhanced Performance”, and officially earned his doctorate!

Dr. Yan's research addresses fundamental limitations in Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) — key components in optical communication, sensing, and imaging. Through innovative geometry engineering and passive thermal management, his work tackles critical challenges such as current crowding, thermal accumulation, efficiency degradation, and speckle noise that have long constrained high-power and high-speed VCSEL performance.

His thesis introduces several novel solutions, including an annular cavity design that improves current uniformity and delays thermal rollover, eccentric annular structures that reduce spatial coherence for speckle-free imaging and ultrafast random number generation, and a passive radiative cooling strategy that enhances thermal dissipation without additional energy consumption. Collectively, these contributions establish a unified framework for simultaneously optimizing power, coherence, and communication capabilities in next-generation photonic systems.

Dr. Yan has been an invaluable member of our lab, and we are incredibly proud of this achievement. Please join us in congratulating him on this well-deserved milestone — we look forward to seeing his continued contributions to the field!
